Digital Cre8or wiki: Basic structure

Some thoughts about the basic structure of our wiki

Further to my posting last week about design considerations, I am thinking along the lines of a 3 part structure as follows:
  1. Information about the Digital Cre8or course
  2. The Digital Cre8or community
  3. Digital Cre8or course content
Part 1: Information about the Digital Cre8or course

This section is likely to include the following information:
  • Welcome to students
  • Course overview
  • Course description, aims and objectives and learning outcomes
  • Detailed Course syllabus
  • Course structure
  • How the course works
  • The role of the wiki in the course
  • Wiki structure
  • Course administration
  • Where to find help information
  • Who to contact
Any other suggestions?

Part 2: The Digital Cre8or community

This section is likely to include the following information:
  • Welcome and Introduction to the Digital Cre8or community section
  • The house rules
  • Individual home pages for each community member (staff & students)
  • Community resources
  • Introductory activities
Individual home pages are where course members will post information about themselves and upload media files (eg assignments and personal work) for other members to view and comment on. Course members will also be able to blog in this space on issues relevant to the course.

Community resources might include useful links or media that course members have found and wish to share with the community.

Any other thoughts about what might be in this section?

Part 3: Digital Cre8or course content

This section is likely to include the following information:
  • Welcome and introduction to the course content section
  • Introductory activities
  • Core course module documents
  • Essential online course resources (media files, presentations, links etc)
  • Details of student activities
  • Details of student assignments
  • Details of equipment and support available in Resource Centres
  • Suggestions for further study
Have I left out anything here? More generally, are 3 sections enough or do we need a 4th section to deal with orientation and support for using the wiki? Or can support for the wiki itself be accommodated within the other 3 sections? Which would be clearer/easier for the students to follow?

Pllease let me have your thoughts.

  1. I think we should include a 4th section for support. Although we could probably get away with putting this in the first section, in order to improve usability I think it would be best to have a separate support section. This way, the user could find help in one click, rather than having to trawl through the first section. Within the support section, we could include the 'Where to find help information' and 'Who to contact' parts of section 1.

I think the areas you identified within the other sections are clearly defined and have a good structure to them. I cant see anything obvious that is missing. I think these areas would be a good starting point, and would allow our users to develop them as the Wiki evolves.

  2. Following George's suggestion would give us a 4 part structure as follows:

    1. Information about the Digital Cre8or course
    2. The Digital Cre8or community
    3. Digital Cre8or course content
    4. Technical support

I think George is probably right in saying that this would improve the usability .
